What should an HVAC energy estimate include?
A useful estimate looks beyond the SEER2 number. It should consider how long the system runs, whether it removes humidity, whether ducts deliver air evenly, and whether the home is asking the system to solve insulation or airflow problems.
- Runtime: systems that run constantly may have airflow, refrigerant, sizing, or load issues.
- Humidity: a home can feel uncomfortable even when the thermostat says it is cool.
- Maintenance: dirty coils and filters can raise runtime and reduce comfort.
- Ducts: leaky or restricted ducts can waste conditioned air before it reaches rooms.
